Before I decided, or perhaps discovered, that an academic career was for me, I explored several career options, including a short time in the British Royal Marines, working as a general laborer in construction, then training and working several years as a bricklayer.
Inspired by construction site discussions on philosophy and life, I went to university to learn more. I earned a degree in social sciences at London South Bank University (formerly known as “South Bank Poly”) followed by a social work qualification at Croydon College.
After working as a social worker in London I moved to Canada and worked as a Probation Officer and then a Child Protection Worker, I completed a Master’s in Social Work at York University, followed by a PhD at University of Toronto and began my academic career, first at University of Victoria and then McMaster University.
