Teaching

My teaching emphasises critical thinking and self-reflective learning processes. To facilitate such processes I attempt to create a learning environment of equity, respect, responsibility, curiosity, collaboration, flexibility, risk-taking and creativity. I encourage students to help create this environment by sharing their own experiences, ideas and reflections abut the topic being taught. Equal emphasis, however, is placed on students feeling comfortable setting boundaries around their sharing. I do not expect students with personal experience of issues being discussed in class, such as being on the receiving end or racism or other form of marginalization, to educate others regarding these topics.

My teaching methods are based on constructivist and adult learning principles. I present class material through a wide range of media and place emphasis on students interacting with ideas. I also try to make learning an enjoyable experience.

Current courses being taught, and prevous courses (from July 2002), are lised below. All courses are taught at McMaster unless otherwise stated.
